LIVERPOOL PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL FIT FOR THE FUTURE - BACKGROUND

In 2014, the State Government announced a major local government reform program that is known as “Fit for the Future”. This reform program required most NSW councils to consider amalgamation options with neighbouring councils as the Government looked to investigate the efficiency of councils and to reduce the number of regional and metropolitan councils.

For LPSC, the Government required us to consider an amalgamation with Gunnedah Council or remain independent and form a Joint Organisation to work in partnership with Namoi Councils, with a detailed Council improvement proposal. It was decided by both councils that merging was not the best option overall for our communities.

Extensive community consultation across the Shire was conducted in March and April which included meetings, workshops and pop-up information stalls. Four thousand surveys were sent to households including businesses within the Shire. Over 1000 people participated in the survey, 87.3% of the participants stated they wanted to remain independent.

LPSC are confident that the Shire can stand alone and work in partnership with other councils by resource sharing and streamlining processes.
